When people think about security, they often picture alarms, cameras, armed response, or guards. Yet the most powerful security system in any community is not technology – it’s awareness. At Broubart, we often say that technology is a force multiplier, but awareness is the first line of defence. That’s why we’ve developed the concept of the 5 Senses of Community Safety; practical tools that empower every resident to play a role in making our communities safer.
The first sense is sight. Most incidents are not completely random; they are often preceded by warning signs. An unfamiliar vehicle parked in an unusual location, someone loitering near a property, a gate left open, or suspicious movement in an area – these are all signals that something may be wrong. Simply observing our surroundings and paying attention can prevent incidents before they occur. Criminals thrive when nobody is watching. Awareness begins with seeing.
The second sense is hearing. Many incidents are first identified through sound -arguments, breaking glass, dogs barking unusually, alarms sounding, or people shouting for assistance. In today’s distracted world of headphones, cell phones, and busy routines, we often disconnect from what’s happening around us. Yet one of the simplest forms of security is listening. Your ears can detect danger before your eyes do.
The third sense is smell, which may surprise some. Smoke, burning electrical equipment, gas leaks, chemical spills, or fuel odours can all indicate serious risks long before they escalate into emergencies. Security isn’t only about crime; it’s about protecting people. Being aware of unusual smells can prevent fires, injuries, and even save lives.
The fourth sense is feel. Physical awareness often reveals problems before they grow. A gate that feels loose, a door that doesn’t lock properly, a fence that appears damaged, a surface that feels unusually hot, or a vibration that seems abnormal, these small indicators often signal bigger issues developing. The key is not to ignore them.
The fifth sense is thinking. This is perhaps the most important. Modern security isn’t just about noticing something; it’s about understanding what you’re seeing. Thinking critically means connecting information, spotting patterns, and asking questions: Why is that vehicle here? Why has this person passed through three times? Why has activity suddenly changed? Technology such as AI analytics, ANPR cameras, and monitoring centres assist us enormously, but ultimately, someone must think critically and make decisions.
Finally, awareness must lead to action. Awareness without action achieves very little. If you see something suspicious, report it. If you hear something unusual, investigate safely or notify the right people. If technology identifies a threat, act on the information. At Broubart we often say: The earlier we know, the more options we have. Prevention starts with awareness, but it is completed through action.
Community safety matters because crime is rarely prevented by one person acting alone. Safer communities are created when residents communicate, share information, report concerns early, and support one another. Technology like community camera networks, AI monitoring, ANPR systems, WhatsApp groups, CPF structures, and proactive monitoring all become more powerful when communities work together.
