Women’s Day in South Africa: Celebrating Support, Strength, and Safety
Published 8th August 2025

Every year in August, South Africa celebrates Women’s Day — a time to recognise the powerful role women play in shaping families, uplifting communities, and holding society together. Today, South African women are not just caregivers or professionals — they are pillars of strength, protectors, mentors, and leaders. Their influence extends far beyond the home, reaching into every part of life where care, resilience, and unity are needed most.

Women at the Heart of Support Systems
In homes across South Africa, women are the glue that holds families together. Whether providing emotional support to loved ones, guiding children through life’s challenges, or standing by friends during difficult times, women offer a kind of strength that is both quiet and powerful. They lead with compassion, stand with courage, and lift others even when they are carrying heavy burdens of their own.

But Strength Shouldn’t Mean Facing Danger Alone
Even as women nurture and support those around them, many face serious threats to their own safety. Gender-based violence remains a national crisis:

  • 1 in 3 women have experienced physical intimate partner violence.
  • Between July and September 2024 alone, over 957 women were murdered, 1,567 survived attempted murder, and more than 14,000 suffered grievous assaults.
  • Over 10,000 rape cases were reported in a single quarter.
  • South Africa’s femicide rate is among the highest in the world.

Practical Safety Tips for Everyday Life
While long-term solutions must come from systemic change, there are steps women can take to protect themselves and those they love.

Situational Awareness

  • Trust your instincts — if something feels wrong, don’t ignore it.
  • Stay alert in unfamiliar or isolated environments.
  • Avoid distractions like loud music or texting when moving through public spaces.

Smart Travel Practices

  • Share your location with someone you trust.
  • Sit behind the driver in taxis or rideshares for easier access to exits.
  • Keep vehicle doors locked and windows up when driving alone.

Using Technology for Safety

  • Investigate how AI camera solutions can work for you
  • Save emergency contacts and ensure they’re easy to access quickly.
  • Turn on location sharing when you’re feeling unsafe or traveling alone.

Home Security Measures

  • Use motion-sensor lights and lock all doors and windows securely.
  • Install AI cameras or smart monitored camera systems.
  • Install intercom systems and check before opening.
  • Installing an alarm system or panic button for added peace of mind.

Knowledge is Empowering

  • Take self-defence classes or attend empowerment workshops.
  • Learn basic first aid and how to respond in emergencies.
  • Know where to access local support services.
  • Ensure you have your alarm and community protection services numbers on speed dial.
